Don’t Sweat It – Eliminate Underarm Sweat without Surgery or Ongoing Injections

The fact that the human body has 2.5 million sweat glands is never more apparent than in summer! Whether the recently sizzling Kansas City temperatures make you sweat, stink or melt, you and your underarms do have options to stop summer underarm sweat now and all year long!

Why Sweat Is Important

Sweat glands are tubes in which sweat is produced and then transported to the surface of the skin. Many people think of sweat as rather unpleasant, but it does serve an important purpose. Also referred to as perspiration, sweat serves to cool the body off. To perform this purpose well, sweat glands are spread all over the body, with only a few exceptions. In all, each body typically has more than two million sweat glands.

Although sweating is a very normal and necessary activity, approximately 1-3 percent of the population has overactive sweat glands in one or more areas. The condition is called hyperhydrosis and it needs more drastic treatment.

Sweaty Underarms

Perhaps the most annoying area for excessive sweat is the underarm area.    Sweat itself does not in fact smell. However, underarm sweat does smell. The familiar smell of body odor, or B.O, comes from normal skin bacteria located in the armpits breaking down the sweat secretions released from the sweat glands.

Body odor mainly originates from the apocrine glands in the armpits, which release a thick, oily sweat rich in proteins and lipids which bacteria on the skin feed on. Body odor occurs during exercise and when we feel strong emotions, because these are the triggers for the apocrine gland to secrete sweat. The warm, damp conditions of the armpit are also a perfect environment for bacteria to thrive in and create smelly odors.

Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant

Deodorants are antibacterial astringents that reduce odor-causing bacteria. Astringents may help in drying somewhat, but antiperspirant is what stops the sweat. The active ingredient, aluminum, is what plugs up the sweat gland. So if you want to compare how strong the brands are, just look at the aluminum content. Aluminum can irritate sensitive skin, so it's a personal decision as to how strong you want your antiperspirant to be.

Prescription strength treatments are available. For example, Drysol is the strongest available with 20 percent aluminum. With this one, you need to apply to dry skin at night; wash off in morning. You apply nightly for a few nights, then one or two times a week thereafter because it can be irritating to your skin.

Botox Injections to Stop Underarm Sweat

Botox injections are another alternative to treat hyperhidrosis of the armpits. It typically lasts 3-6 months, so ongoing treatment is required.

miraDry Underarm Treatment

miraDry, also known as miraSmooth, is the only long-lasting, non-surgical option to treat underarm sweat and its related odor.  Popular with patients suffering with hyperhidrosis of the underarms, miraDry is also a very popular treatment for anyone ever bothered by their underarm sweat, embarrassed to lift their arms because of their underarm shirt stains, worried about toxins, tired of feeling sticky, or self-conscious about the related odor.

The miraDry system uses safe microwave energy that targets and destroys the sweat and odor glands in your underarm. Once those glands are destroyed they do not grow back—so once they are gone, they are gone for good.  Most patients need just one treatment – some excessive sweaters may need two treatments.  This procedure is performed in the comfort and convenience of a physician’s office and is, typically, not covered by insurance.  The best news is that relief from underarm sweat is IMMEDIATE!
